I noticed the only titles so far are under the founder's name. This isn't necessarily too uncommon
for a small press, especially a new one (look at Silver Leaf Press), but do you have any prospects for/interest from other
authors?
Divica Press is a brand new publisher. Our door officially opened to submissions April 9, 2008, so there are few submissions
at this time. We do have a couple of prospects, but since we are very new to the business we are only just beginning to scout.
What does that mean to you the author? Now is a great time to submit! Don't delay too long, or our submissions
pile could quickly grow. Get your submission on the top of the pile by submitting now. All queries are reviewed in the order
they are received.
How many titles do you hope to publish a year?
At most, we are hoping to publish 5 new titles in 2008. Hopefully in the years to come that number can start to grow.
Do you have any guidelines for new agents who want to do business with Divica Press?
Divica Press does not work with agented authors. We believe that the author has the right to receive all royalties. Our
specialty is with new authors of fantasy fiction, and if your work was received by an agent, we encourage you to advance toward
the larger press publishers.
As an unpublished author, do I need an agent?
No. We do not accept manuscripts from agented authors. There is not much an agent can do for most new authors other than try
to locate a publisher. If you have already signed up with an agent, we encourage you to approach publishers such as TOR, Baen, or DAW.
Our book contracts are pretty uniform. We rarely ever negotiate the royalty percentages. However, if you are already
committed to an agent, you must honor that commitment.
Your site says "Fantasy only"...but what about crossgenre work?
No. We do not deal with cross-genre works for one simple reason. Our knowledge on science fiction is very limited, which
is not fair to the writer. Divica Press' focus is on:
- Dark Fantasy
- Epic Fantasy
- Heroic Fantasy
- High Fantasy
- Historical Fantasy
- Juvenial Fantasy
- Sword and Sorcery
Again, this is to benefit the writer as much as ourselves. If your work is cross-genre, you have the right to a publisher/agent
who knows the inner workings of cross-genre work.
How do I submit my manuscript to Divica Press?
Please review our submission guidelines and follow them strictly.
If I describe my book in an e-mail message, can you tell me if you want to look at it?
No. All submissions must be sent according to submission guidelines. Please review them carefully before submitting any queries to Divica Press. Any emails received that do not follow the specified
guidelines will not be considered. We do apologize for this, but we want to be certain that everyone who submits has an equal
chance at publication.
Why are there author submission guidelines?
We have a very specific evaluation process. This process requires a certain amount of material to be on hand, and
because a submission may only receive one evaluation, or several, we need to keep this process uniform. Making sure that each
submission package contains the same amount of material helps to give each author fair and equal representation. The more
closely you can adhere to the guidelines, the smoother the evaluation process will be, and you will end up hearing about your
novel sooner.
How do I make a good first impression?
Be sure your information is accurate. This includes being sure that what you are sending is something we're going to want
to look at.
If you don't know if your novel would be suited to our press, don't be afraid to ask first. We have goals and a specific
kind of material we want to see. Research any company you are looking at before you send them anything; not only will you
save yourself time and money, but you will prove yourself to be thorough and "on the ball".
Another thing that will ensure your first impression is a good one is to make sure that your submission package is complete
and error-free. Don't assume your email is attaching what you tell it to. Double check before sending to be certain that you
have attached the correct document. Other common errors are cover/query letters addressed to other publishers, or missing
material in the submission. If you're not sure if you should include something, or what the publisher's submission guidelines
are, ask first.
My book isn't finished yet. Can I still query about it?
No. In order for a novel to be considered for publication, the full, complete manuscript must be available upon request.
If we are interested in a novel, we want to publish it as soon as possible, without delay.
Please consider submission with Divica Press again once you have completed the entire manuscript.
Can I fax my query or submission?
No. We only accept queries and submissions by email.
I have submitted a manuscript to Divica Press, but have not received any answer.
If you did not receive a response that your submission was received within 24 hours, please re-submit. If you did but have
not heard back from our editor, please be patient. The review process can take up to one month. If you have not heard back
after a month, feel free to inquire. Our editor will do her best to let you know why you have not heard back yet.
Every submission receives a response via emial, whether it is accepted or not. Divica Press will not leave you wondering
two or more months later what happened.
Do I need to hire a publicist?
Some of our authors decide to hire a publicist after being signed up by us. This can be a good decision if the publicist
knows how to expose the author locally. It makes very little sense to hire an East Coast publicist if you live on the West
Coast, or the other way around. That's money wasted.
A word of caution: do not hire a publicist if you're unwilling to do the hard work yourself. No publicist can replace
you at the center of your book's success.
What are my obligations as an author?
The author is an active participant in the publication process. Divica Press will contact the author for input and approval
along the way. For more information, please read 10 Steps to Publication for more details.
The book industry puts initial local marketing front and center where the author is excellently positioned
to directly communicate with his/her audience. Because the book is closely and often intimately linked to the author's personal
life experiences, fears, hopes, and dreams, it's the author who is designated to spearhead local promotion.
When will I see my book in print?
The official answer is between eight and twelve months. The truth is, we want to release an accepted
book soon, but wisely, so this time frame can very from book to book.
